- Veela
- In south-east Europe the Vala or Völva, the sibyl of the north, became the kindly sprite of the woods, such as Oossood. This is a typical example of the degradation of the priestess sibyl into the semi-human dryad, under the influence of religious pressure. They loved to dance, and fairy rings are to this day called Vilinio Kollo in the Balkans. If disturbed while dancing—presumably part of their religious rites—they were hostile to men, but they could, nevertheless, be amiably disposed and help them. On occasions they married humans and bore children. Prince Marco received great help from a Veela named Raviyoyla. They were gifted with second sight and healing properties of flowers and herbs.
